4 Natural Remedies that May Reverse Alzheimer’s Disease
It seems as if there are always new studies coming out about different researchers finding ways to reverse the signs of Alzheimer’s disease. While sometimes these studies are later proven to be false or are controversial, the fact remains that people and researchers are always on the lookout for new ways to combat Alzheimer’s. The good news is that researchers have discovered ways that certain natural products may actually reverse some of the damage caused by the progression of the disease.
Here are four natural remedies that have been tested and may reverse the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Turmeric
Turmeric has been used in India for over 5,000 years so maybe it’s no coincidence that this part of the world has some of the lowest rates of Alzheimer’s of anywhere. A recent study said that patients who took less than a gram a day for about three months showed “remarkable improvements” in their condition. By enhancing the clearance of amyloid-beta plaque in the arteries of patients, taking turmeric caused symptoms of the disease and the burden on caregivers to decrease.
Human Umbilical Cord Blood
New blood from a human umbilical cord was shown to reverse memory and learning problems in aged mice according to another study. The area of the brain called the hippocampus, which is crucial for memory formation, was rejuvenated by this kind of blood protein therapy. The hippocampus is one of the first to deteriorate in old age, but when treated with younger blood, older mice acted like younger mice by doing activities such as building a nest—something usually only done by younger mice. The key here is that human umbilical cord blood has higher levels of the protein TIMP2 than older blood and this particular protein may hold a key to reversing some of the signs of aging in the brain.
Vitamin C
Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have discovered that when mice that were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s were treated with Vitamin C, they showed signs of reversing the disease. According to research, Vitamin C can dissolve certain toxic proteins found in the brains of those with the disease. Vitamin C, which is found naturally in food, can also be chemically attached to certain drugs and aid in the penetration of the blood-brain barrier. This may help certain medications reach areas of the brain that they may not otherwise be able to reach on their own.
Diet and Lifestyle Adaptations
In a 2014 UCLA study, nine out of 10 patients were able to reverse cognitive decline through certain diet and lifestyle modifications. Some of these modifications were as simple as adding more fish into the diet and avoiding simple carbohydrates, while also incorporating more exercise and better sleep into the patient’s daily routine. The only patient who did not see improvements in his condition was one with a more advanced state of the disease. The improvements for the group did continue for two and a half years, creating hope that if patients are willing to adopt certain lifestyle modifications in the earlier stages of the disease, perhaps they will see a reversal in the progression of the disease.
Before starting any type of home remedy or other health plan, it is critical that you consult a doctor. Alzheimer’s Disease is a terrible form of dementia that affects many adults every year. A diagnosis of this type of dementia can completely alter someone’s life, as well as the lives of his or her loved ones. Anyone who has been affected by the disease knows the importance of the research that goes into finding a cure as well as paths of reversal.
